Oracle Database Administrator
Location : Westbrook ,Maine
Durtion : 6 months
Rate : $55/hr 


 
JOB SUMMARY: 
 
Has primary responsibility for the definition, creation, maintenance and support of large database environments on UNIX and LINUX operating systems.  
Analyzes, tests, implements physical database design supporting various business applications (including base definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines).  
Ensures data recovery, maintenance, data integrity, and space requirements for databases are met through formulations and monitoring of policies, procedures, and standards.  
Has a willingness to work with customers of varying levels of technical expertise in a high-pressure, complex environment.  
Above all, ensures database solutions meet or exceed business objectives.  
This includes establishing and maintaining a high level of user trust in IT's knowledge of and concern for users' business needs. 
 
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
• Database performance monitoring and tuning:  Closely monitor performance, identify problems and implement solutions; ensure the database is running at optimum speed and efficiency.
• Provides application support:   Resolve problems and answer questions related to the RDMS and platform environment; contact vendor support when necessary; facilitate application development and client problem resolution with optimum speed and efficiency.
• Maintain database backup/recovery environment: Respond quickly to refresh data; verify implementation of correct backup strategy; develop recovery procedures; support recovery from loss of data caused by user or system.
• Install and upgrade database and related products: Keep databases at current release and maintenance levels; install supporting products; provide current, stable production and development environments.
• Reorganize database structures: use tools to reorganize or defragment database table spaces, tables, and indexes; provide efficient database environment to maximize productivity and improve performance.
• Provide assistance in database design as needed:  Research and recommend optimal design criteria; publish standards and work with development staff; standardize environment and improve efficiency.
• Capacity planning and reporting:  Monitor file system space, database allocation, etc.; verify efficient use of disk storage; reclaim dead space; optimize space allocation and avoid out-of-space conditions.
• Ensure standardization of systems and methods: support techniques, and adherence to formal processes, change control, best practices and total quality practices in all activities.
• Provide 24 X 7 on call support on a rotating basis: Quickly identify and resolve any production database issue; able to work with a team of people to resolve complex issues.  
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
 
 
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline; equivalent experience acceptable.
 
To be effective in this role, the Database Administrator must remain current with state-of-the-art database technologies and data management practices.  Also must be able to influence and educate project teams on the importance of good data management practices.
 
EXPERIENCE: 
·Four or more years of recent experience as an Oracle DBA.
·Experience with highly used, very large data warehouse environments.
·Experience as a Microsoft SQL Server DBA is desirable.
·Demonstrated experience working well with customers of varying levels of technical expertise in high-pressure situations and complex environments.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 
 
·Understanding and experience with Oracle RMAN and Flashback technologies, including integration to third party backup agents that integrate with RMAN.
·Real world experience with the following Oracle technologies: RAC, ASM, RMAN, Data Guard and Data Pump.  
·Exadata . 
·Understanding of how to properly recommend disk space, RAM and CPU capacities related to sizing an Oracle environment.
·Ability to monitor and tune databases to meet application needs.
·Experience in installing, patching and upgrading Oracle 10g and 11g database environments.
·Experience in designing, modeling, developing, and supporting large Data Warehouse databases.
·Experience in logical and physical database design.
·Experience in implement and maintain database security (create and maintain users and roles, assign privileges).
·Strong diagnostic and problem solving ability.
·Strong customer focus and management of client expectations; ability to establish and maintain a high level of user trust and confidence in IT's knowledge of and concern for users' business needs.
·Excellent oral and written communication skills.
·Experience with cross-platform networking in a TCP/IP environment.
·Full knowledge of SQL, triggers and PL/SQL, including programming and ways to optimize SQL code.
·Experience with UNIX shell scripting languages (KSH, Perl, etc).
·Enthusiastic, hard working, independent, and self motivated.
