UNIX Server Administration Support Descriptions
Server Performance, Planning, Monitoring, and Reporting
Roles:
The engineer has full responsibility for operational and troubleshooting and engineering support of Unix servers and supported applications.
Responsibilities:
The Unix Server Engineer is responsible for the following primary elements of server Problem Resolution:
· Research and apply module and/or security updates to servers as needed.
· Perform server administration functions such as scripting, user and/or group development and implementation.
· Analyzing file server performance data when needed.
· Establishing detection of incipient hardware component failure, including network components using tools such as Compaq's Insight Manager and Dell's Open Manage
· Establishing automated corrective action for server problems where possible.
· Assist with Client server connectivity issues.
· Assist with Network traffic issues.
· After hours support for server systems to be performed on as a rotation of Unix/Linux Support Team engineers.
· Assist the customer with distinguishing servers that could be disabled from those that must remain operational during periods of high risk or attack. Servers will be documented by criticality to distinguish each server's operational priority.
· Perform account audits, log reviews, system file audits, patch audits, service audits and ports/protocol analysis for servers that must remain operational. Review results of such reviews and audits with the project lead(s)
· Install required server patches; remove unnecessary and unwanted files, applications, services and accounts. Document all such activity in a network device change log.
Qualifications:
· 5+ years working in a Consultant or related role
· Advanced knowledge of UNIX system internals, including performance tuning experience, troubleshooting, bug fix updates and advanced troubleshooting.
· Experienced implementing Virtualization technologies in an enterprise setting.
· Experience with enterprise wide deployments.
· Demonstrated experience communicating value, progress, and metrics (status) of key projects to required stakeholders and diverse audiences (technical and business).
· Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills.
· Ability to be on call, perform night shift and/or weekend shift duties on an emergency basis.
· Unix hardware platforms: Sun
o Unix OS platforms: Sun Solaris 8, 9, 10
o Sun Solaris:
o SUN Certified System Administrator
o SUN Certified Network Administrator
o SUN Certified Security Administrator
· VERITAS Storage Foundation, (4 – 5 yrs preferable) 4.0 Administrator
o VERITAS Storage Foundation / Volume Manager
o VERITAS Storage/Volume Replicator
o VERITAS Cluster Server
o VERITAS NetBackup
· Backup Technologies:
o Legato Certified Networker 7.x Administrator
o CommVault/Simpana Backup systems
· SAN experience, (4 – 5 yrs preferable) of mid to large scale operational support
o SAN proficiencies with EMC Clarion and Dell Compellent SC40
o Cisco Director Level Switches
