Distributed Systems Engineer III (NOSQL Big Data Engineer / HDFS Engineer) Need a level II and Level III resource.
The primary responsibility of this role will be to manage, tune and enhance the broad range of distributed computing services running on rapidly expanding distributed computing clusters. The successful candidate will be able to implement, troubleshoot and tuned a variety of distributed computing components, a subset of which are expounded below. This position does not require extensive experience with each of the discussed services and components, but a passion for learning in new technologies and drive to understand the internals of said services is essential to success in this role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
-Works closely with the capital distributed systems team of system architects and engineers to ensure scalability, manageability and high-availability of new existing distributed computing systems.
-Facilitate a broad range of cluster customers (eg: Advanced analytical team members, BI developers, Solution Architects designing touch points with other online/offline systems, domain architects performing capacity analysis) and optimally leveraging cluster resources.
- Provisions new cluster resources (eg: servers, network devices) while adhering to and refining best practices.
- Support pre-production cluster maintenance (service upgraded, node decommissioning) and assists production support teams with maintenance operations when issues are escalated. (must be willing to provide support off hours)
- Optimize allocations of cluster resources through management of scheduling queues and quotas.
- Support pre-production and production support teams in the analysis of cluster service errors that are escalated to the Distributed Systems engineering team:
* Enact short-term and long-term remediation with hardware/software vendors, developers and system architects while documenting solutions and providing knowledge transfer to support teams.
-Continually enhance system configuration automation ( eg: via Chef cookbook modifications) and identify opportunities to improve service resiliency and throughput via configuration tuning.
- Perform system benchmarks before and after substantial configuration charges to quantify system impact along relevant resource dimensions
- Collaborate with infrastructure domain and application architects to ensure new cluster services are optimally implemented and managed.
- Ensure appropriate monitoring and instrumentation of cluster services is configured, developing and implementing new monitors where necessary
- Communicate acquired knowledge and skills to peers while serving as a technical mentor to other engineers.
Skills and Experience 1 = Level II ( 3 - 5 years) 1= Level III (5- 10+ years).
Degree Required: Computer Science or Related Required:
Advanced Linux administration Hadoop administration experience with a drive to develop expertise and understand the internals Experience with Chef configuration management with a keen interest in developing expertise Ability to provision new cluster nodes from bare metal to full cluster membership (refactoring build process as necessary) Basic knowledge of JVM tuning Basic ability to read Java code and interpret stack interfaces Preferred skills: Familiarity with Hive data access patterns and basic MapReduce tuning Familiarity with HBase, YARN, Kafka Experience using Sqoop Some capacity planning experience Experience installing and working with monitoring tools like Nagios , ganglia Understanding of distributed system concurrency, threading and parallel algorithm implementation Familiarity with distributed computing concepts such as Paxos and ZAB protocols CAP theorem, vector clocks CALM principle, CRDT's etc Must have strong English written, verbal and presentation skills
