Java  web Developer
Location: chevy chase, MD  and knoxville, TN
Duration: 10+months

The  Client, Web Development organization has an immediate need for a Java Software Engineer to collaborate with a diverse team of software engineers in design and development of multi-tier, web based applications.  Candidates should possess at least 5 years of professional experience and preferably hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar technical field.  We value creativity, intelligence, technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills, and cultivate a team based approach in all aspects of the application development lifecycle.

 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

§  Develop detailed technical design specifications based on business requirements.
§  Brainstorm with other software engineers to develop creative solutions for delivery of relevant client  content to our interactive end users.
§  Design and develop Java based web service applications.
§  Design and develop Endeca search applications, and architect all underlying Endeca data structures.
§  Analyze, troubleshoot and resolve interactive application and system issues.
§  Participate in performance tuning of all applications before production release.
§  Participate in release planning and execution in conjunction with the systems operations team.
§  Thoroughly document project deliverables, including architecture, design, technical implementation, performance metrics, production environment, and application/system operational details.  Work with the development team to successfully transfer operational support to the Enterprise IT Operations organization.
§  Contribute to the project planning process by estimating tasks, level of effort and deliverables.
§  Proactively anticipate issues and work toward timely resolution to prevent project impact.
§  Work within clearly defined build and configuration management processes.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

§  The ability to work with other engineers to analyze business and functional requirements, translate them into technical specifications which support the architecture, design and implementation of robust, scalable and supportable platforms. 
§  Experience developing and unit testing Java enterprise applications.
§  Experience  in J2EE technologies and frameworks including Spring and Hibernate
§  Proficiency in database technologies such as Oracle and MySQL. Strong knowledge and skill with SQL.
§  Experience with Object-Oriented programming and design patterns.
§  Familiarity with Linux and/or Solaris, UNIX shell scripting, and other scripting languages such as Perl, PHP or Python.
§  Working knowledge of XML/XSL.
§  Working experience with formal build and configuration management processes.
§  Strong aptitude for analysis, troubleshooting and issue resolution.
§  A strong desire to learn and the ability to assess emerging technologies within the framework of our environment
§  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
§  The ability to discuss design approaches within a team, present options while keeping an open mind.
§  The ability to partner with product owners, project management and other engineers to successfully implement and launch quality applications.

Desirable :

§  Experience with Enterprise Search technology such as Endeca, or Lucene.
§   Experience or interests in development and optimizations of ETL processes.
§  Development experience in multi-threaded and/or multi-processing applications.
§  Experience building web services frameworks with technologies such as Apache CXF and Spring MVC.

This position requires strong interpersonal, writing and communication skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a team oriented environment.  Multi-tasking and organizational competency is a must.
